The 3 broad areas of research
conducted at SERI are:
Clinical Research :
SERI conducts pharmaceutical, surgical and laser-related
human clinical trials, and clinical studies in visual
psychophysics. Clinical trials conducted include cataract,
glaucoma, corneal transplantation, pterygium and retinal
surgery trials, pharmaceutical and ocular drug delivery
trials, visual psychophysics studies and refractive surgery
and myopia clinical trials.
Basic and Applied Laboratory
Research :
SERI laboratories are equipped for cell and molecular
biology microanalytical and tissue culture facilities
and increasingly for molecular genetics. As with our clinical
research programs, collaborative projects have been developed
with scientists in other research institutions which include
the NUS, NTU, and DMRI. These projects study the genetic,
cell and molecular basis of eye diseases with the aim
of developing new treatment modalities including new technologies
and inventions which may be commercialized.
Ocular Epidemiological Research
:
SERI conducts and coordinates large-scale epidemiological
and population-based projects studying eye diseases in
our community, with a specific intent to evaluate environmental
risk factors for these diseases. Close links have been
established with the NUS Department of Community, Occupational
and Family Medicine (COFM) to develop epidemiological
studies on myopia, glaucoma, cataract and pterygium.
