Dr Louis-M Tong Hak Tien, Registrar of SNEC, Clinical Tutor, Faculty of Medicine, National University of Singapore, was one of six scholars to receive the Biomedical Fellowship launched in July 2003 by A*STAR.

The primary focus of this Fellowship is to foster the creation of a small pool of clinician-scientists in Singapore who are comfortable in basic or translational research as well as clinical medicine. The Fellowship offers a two-year overseas laboratory training and supports up to 10 clinicians annually for overseas research training in reputed universities/institutions.

Dr Tong will be attached to the Ocular Surface Center, Baylor College of Medicine, Texas for two years. His research title at the Ocular Surface Center is "Molecular Pathophysiology of Inflammation and Angiogenesis in the Ocular Surface" under the supervisorship of Professor of Ophthalmology, Stephen C. Pflugfelder, M.D. and James and Margaret Elkins Chair, Baylor College of Medicine.
