The Singapore Eye Research Institute (SERI) is the national research institute in ophthalmology and vision science in Singapore , and one of the leading eye research institutes in the Asia Pacific region in terms of quantity and quality of peer-reviewed publications. Serving as the research institute of the Singapore National Eye Centre, and directly affiliated to the Yong Loo Lin School of Medicine, National University of Singapore, as well the Duke-NUS Graduate Medical School , SERI undertakes vision research in collaboration with local clinical ophthalmic centres and biomedical research institutions, as well as major eye centers and research institutes throughout the world.

SERI has a staff of 130 and an annual budget of $5million, and conducts all aspects of clinical, translational/applied and basic research in ophthalmology and the visual sciences. Our focus areas of research include myopia, ocular stem cell research, ocular surface disease, diabetic eye disease, glaucoma, age-related macular degeneration, ocular imaging, epidemiology and clinical trials. In the 5 years, SERI is undergoing a major exciting re-development and will have available more than $30million injection of new research funds, state of the art facilities, and faculties. Eye research in Singapore is on par in terms of recognition and importance as cardiovascular disease, cancer, and diabetes.

We are inviting suitably qualified candidates for the following positions:


Research EXECUTIVE

Responsibilities :

  • Responsible for the general administration of the SERI Administrative office.
  • Handling of staff-related matters i.e. leave forecast, staff car-park etc
  • Maintenance/ renewal of service and equipment contracts
  • Maintenance/ loan of IT software/ licenses
  • IT Liaison for the SERI Administrative office
  • PA support to Deputy Director
  • Provide admin support to the Research Executives, Asst Directors and Directors
  • Preparation/ compilation of SERI Annual Report
  • Responsible for the upkeep of the research elective database and related matters.
  • Responsible for the upkeep of the adjunct appointment database and related matters.
  • SERI’s representative to the SNEC Recreation Club

Requirements :

  • Degree holder with at least 2 years of administrative experience
  • Candidates with a Science / Biomedical degree and /or experience working in a research-related environment would be preferred
  • A self-driven, proactive and meticulous individual who possesses good interpersonal skills to work in a team-based environment.
  • Excellent organizational and communication skills
  • Good writing skills
  • Able to work in a fast-paced environment
  • PC literacy in MS Words and Excel

GRADER

The successful candidate(s) will be involved in advanced translational research where primarily he/she will study the impact of clinical diseases on the eye using state-of-the-art computer technology to aid in developing clinical application and commercial feasibility. He/She will be part of the SERI Ocular Imaging team and will be required to work with our industrial collaborators and medical researchers. On job training will be provided for successful candidate(s).

Responsibilities :

  • Minimum Diploma and above (Fresh graduates are welcome)
  • Organized, neat and meticulous
  • Able to perform multiple tasks at one time and work under tight deadlines
  • Able to work well in a team as well as independently
  • Interest in visual arts and/or photography is an advantage

Requirements :

  • Achieve daily target of graded images as well as overall grading project objectives
  • Grade retina images using multiple grading techniques for projects assigned
  • Conduct quality check assessment on images for all studies periodically
  • Perform primary assessment of photography sites as well as site photographer certification
  • Maintain an integrated grading database for all projects with backups offsite
  • Grade various types of images using different grading techniques
  • Carry out any ad hoc duties assigned

Postdoctoral Research Fellow
(Ocular Wound Healing Group)

We are seeking a highly qualified individual to take on a significant role in rapidly expanding cornea and ocular surface wound healing related research.

Our focus is on understanding the biology of wound healing processes such as cell adhesion, cell migration, matrix production and degradation, and the genetic and chemical intervention in the cellular and molecular processes relevant to these processes.

The individual should have sound background in cell and molecular biology techniques, mammalian cell culture, and should have a track record of publications in international peer reviewed journals. The educational level should be a PhD or MD/PhD, with at least 2 years of post-doctoral experience, and able to assist, demonstrate or guide more junior laboratory staff the basic laboratory techniques.
